Usage of Social Media Tools by Library and Information Professionals (LIPs) in selected Academic Libraries in South-West, Nigeria

This study was carried out to examine the awareness and use of social media tools by library and information professionals (LIPs) in selected academic libraries in South-west, Nigeria and the challenges they face in using social media technologies. A descriptive survey was adopted for this study. The study population comprised 217 library and information professionals from 10 selected academic libraries in South-west, Nigeria. A total enumeration technique was used to cover all the library and information professionals, 136 respondents filled and returned the questionnaire, giving a response rate of 62.7%. The questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The findings show that the majority of LIPs possessed a high level of awareness in the use of social media tools. The study also revealed that social network tools were highly used by LIPs in the academic libraries studied and the types of social media used by LIPs were also revealed. The major challenges faced in the use of social media include inadequate power supply, lack of Internet access and time constraints. The paper recommended that to enhance the use of social media by LIPs, there is a need for constant awareness of the importance of social media tools to LIPs and libraries in effective service delivery, LIPs should be ready to learn, unlearn and be learned in the use of social media and university libraries should provide an enabling environment such as the internet connectivity, power supply and policy to guide LIPs in social media usage.

The use of electronic media by students of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State, Nigeria: A qualitative study

The study investigated the use of electronic media by students of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design using a qualitative approach of data collection. Twenty four students selected across the four selected departments in the school constitute the participants for the study while the focus group discussion was adopted for data collection. Atlas ti8, a qualitative analysis tool, was used to analyze the study. The study's findings showed that students of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos used mobile devices like iPads and smart phones, smart televisions, and smart watches as electronic devices. The main purposes of their use of these devices were for academic activities like note-taking and reading, social networking on sites like WhatsApp and Facebook, watching movies and reading leisurely books, learning, and content creation The study further revealed that pictures, videos, movies and political news as the major electronic media content being used by the students just the contents were used for retrieving academic and entertainment information. The study recommended that parents, guardians and teachers should ensure that students make use of electronic media for productive activities

INTERPERITONEAL VS ORAL ROUTE OF ALCOHOL ADMINISTRATION,WHICH IS BETTER?

The major problem researchers of alcohol intoxication and its dependence face is the route of administration as animals though good do not mimic the perfect subjects i.e. human beings. This study however compares between 2 accepted means of alcohol intoxication namely interperitoneal (i.p) and oral (o.r) routes. A total of 24 Rats were divided into 4 groups vis-à-vis (a) oral group administered with 63mg (10%) and 130mg (20%) ethanol kg-1 body weight (chronic) for a period of 14 days and concomitantly, the intraperitoneal group, injected with 130mg (20%) ethanol kg-1 body weight for a period of 7 days (acute) and lastly the control group injected with normal saline as the body weight dictated. After this period of intoxication the following biochemical parameters were determined ALT, AST, Cholesterol and Electrolyte balance. Ethanol intoxicated rats (chronic and acute) recorded a significant increase in serum aspartate (AST) and Alanine (ALT) amino transferase activities, cholesterol, and a decrease in electrolyte (potassium) the elevation in total protein was not significant with the i.p group showing the highest elevations. Hence, aspartate (AST) and alanine (ALT) aminotransferase, cholesterol, electrolyte estimation (potassium) may be used as biomarkers for the early diagnosis of ethanol toxicity in human beings.
