- ItemOpen AccessPerceived impact of improved living conditions on secondary school youths in a slum neighbourhood(Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos., 2015) Koleoso, H. A.; Afe. Y. A.This study premised on an earlier one that empirically established a direct positive relationship between poor living conditions in slums and low self-value, poor personal development, poor social-economic advancement and social deviations among youths. The living conditions that were considered in this preceding study were drainage provision and flood intervention, environment and housing quality, health provisions, pipe borne water, quality public schools and road networks among others. This current research evaluated the perceived effects of improvements in these living conditions (laying particular emphasis on schooling and quality of education) on secondary school youths in the study area. The study adopted a triangulation between qualitative (observation) and cross sectional survey design. Data were obtained through structured interviews that were conducted on 80 senior students that were randomly selected (systematically), from the only secondary school within the study area. Variables weremeasured using c ategorical scales, while analysis was largely descriptive adopting both frequencies and percentages. The study also established the living conditions in the study area through physical observations. Findings indicate that living conditions in the study areaare poor, while respondents indicate that an improvement in these conditions is a veritable way to enhance self-value, personal development and economic situations of the youths living there. It is also capable of improving moral values and reducing social vices. It is expected that these indications about the positive implication of improved living condition on the negative consequences of slum conditions would bring to fore the need to upgrade slums in order to achieve youth, and invariably national development. Keywords: Improvedliving conditions, Secondary school youths, Slum, Social deviations and Youth development.
