Residents Perception of Safety Index in Festac Town Residential Neighbourhood, Lagos

There is an ever growing need to understand the mechanisms by which the built environment affects the social dynamics and interactions within neighbourhoods. A public housing offering a mix of house types offer opportunity to study these interactions .This paper uses data form the study of a public housing to calculate perception of safety indices of two broad categories of dwelling types. Data was collected through the use of questionnaire administered though stratified systematic sampling. Nineteen (19) identified subjective variables of perception of safety were analyzed statistically. Findings indicate that perception of safety is predicted by time of day and that the perceptions of safety indices for single family neighbourhoods are higher than that of multiple family neighbourhoods. The paper concluded that differences in perception of safety between day and night might be an indicator of inadequacies of infrastructures that support night life and therefore discourage outdoor activities or a natural tendency in people to feel less safe at night.
