- ItemOpen AccessEffects of career Competencies Training and Integrative Life Planning on Self-identity and Career Aspirations of Adolescents in Lokoja Metropolis, Nigeria(African Journal of Higher Education Studies and development, 2015-08) Nwadinigwe, I.P.; Okolie, C.E.; Abe, O.E.The study was designed to determine the impact of developing career competencies and integrative' life planning training (independent variables) on self-identity, career aspiration and the congruity between rea self and ideal self (dependent variables) of adolescents in Lokoja Metropolis. The study employed the descriptive survey and the quasi- experimental pre-test, post-test, control group designs. Multistag sampling procedure was used in selecting initial sample of 800 senio secondary school Two (SSII) students for baseline data. The Ego-identit; scale was administered to determine their self-identity. Respondents that scored30and below out of possible maximum score of 500n the scale wer categorised as having low self-identity. A total 0/227 out 0/800 participant scored30 and below and therefore constituted thefinal samplefor the stud; The 227 participants were randomly assigned to the career competencies training, integrative life planning training and control group. The results ~- the data analysis indicated that there is a significant difference in post-te scores on self-identity among adolescents exposed to career competenci training, integrated life planning training and the control group. There is significant difference in post test scores on career aspiration of adolescents exposed to career competencies training, integrative life planning training and control group. There is a significant difference in congruity between real self and ideal self of adolescents exposed to career competencies training, integrative life planning training and control group participants. Based on thefindings, it is recommended that the government should make sure that career counselling is part andparcel of the students' counseling activities. Parents should be encouraged to take cognizance of congruity between the real self and ideal self of their adolescents so that they can be properly guided on their career aspiration.
