- ItemOpen AccessEffects of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy and Social Skills Training on Anxiety of Adolescent Students from Father-Absent Families in Lagos State(International Journal of Educational Research, 2020) Adeyinka, T.J; Makinde, B.O; Olusakin, A.MThe home is the first and the oldest training ground where the child is mentored by parents, siblings and members of the extended family in which they exhibit different forms of behaviour which he observed and imitates. The home provides the initial training for the child and the parents act as models for their children since the process of socialization depends on both parents playing complementary roles in bringing up the child. Adolescents from father absent households manifest a number of internalizing and externalizing problem behaviour, including anxiety, interpersonal difficulties and low self-esteem. Thus, this study investigated the effects of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Social Skills Training (SST) on anxiety of adolescent students from father-absent families. A pre-test, post-test control group quasi-experimental research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised all Senior Secondary two (SSII) students in Lagos state. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 157 Senior Secondary one and two students comprising of eight two (82) males and seventy five (75) females. The instruments used to obtain relevant for the study were Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Father-Absence Questionnaire (FAQ) and the depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS). Two research hypotheses were generated to guide the study. The pre-test and post- test scores were analysed using analysis of Covariance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significant. The study revealed that Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Social Skills Training significantly reduced anxiety among adolescents from father-absent families. It was also revealed that gender did not have any significant impact on self-esteem of the participants in the experimental groups. In the light of the study’s results, the researchers presented a number of recommendations and proposals.
- ItemOpen AccessEffects of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy and Social Skills Training on Depression of Adolescent Students from Father-Absent Families in Lagos State(Kampala International University KIU Journal of Social Sciences, 2021) Makinde, B.O; Adeyinka, T.J; Olusakin, A.MThe home provides the initial training for the child and the parents act as models for their children since the process of socialisation depends on both parents playing complementary roles in bringing up the child. However, some socialisation difficulties are encountered where these models are missing due to death, divorce, separation or abandonment. Adolescents from father absent households manifest a number of internalising and externalising problem behaviour, including sadness, depression, delinquency, anxiety, interpersonal difficulties and low self-esteem. Thus, this study investigated the effects of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Social Skills Training (SST) on depression of adolescent students from father-absent families. The research work was hinged on Relational frame theory (RFT) and Social Learning theory. Quasiexperimental pre-test/ post-test group design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised all Senior Secondary two (SS11) students in Lagos state. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 157 Senior Secondary two students comprising of eighty two (82) males and seventy five (75) females. The instruments used to obtain relevant data for the study were Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), Father-Absence Questionnaire (FAQ) and The depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS). Two research questions were raised and two research hypotheses were generated to guide the study. The pre---test and post-test scores were analysed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that Acceptance-Commitment Therapy and Social Skills Training significantly reduced depression among adolescents from father-absent families. It was also revealed that gender did not have any significant impact on depression of the participants in the experimental groups. In the light of the study`s results, the researchers presented a number of recommendations and proposals the most important of which are: There should be awareness and enlightenment workshops and campaigns for parents on the effects of father absence on the increasing risk of depression resulting to escalating rate of suicide among adolescents in secondary schools. The Ministry of education and other stakeholders should provide counselling centres equipped with materials for Acceptance-Commitment Therapy and other psychological therapies used in the treatment of depression as an integral and functional part of primary health care centres.
- ItemOpen AccessOverdependence on the Oil Sector and Economic Growth in Nigeria: The Counselling Implications(UNILAG Annual Research Conference & Fair, 2016-11-09) Olusakin, A.M; Adeyinka, T.JBefore the exploration and exportation of crude oil in Nigeria, Nigeria's economy was eminently sustained by agriculture which accounted for over 70% of foreign exchange earnings and 95% of local food consumption. Today, petroleum dominates the Nigerian economy. Fluctuation in world oil prices and the attendant global economic crisis has led to budget deficit which symbolized a great weakness in the nation's economy. This has tended to negatively affect our development plans and the implementation of capital projects. This calls for urgent need for diversification as a means of freeing our economy and the nation from over-dependence on oil. This study thereforeinvestigated overdependence on oil sector and economic growth in Nigeria: The counselling implications. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and made use of secondary data. The study revealed that: Overdependence on crude oil impacted positively on growth based on the two period lag value of the variable, however, this positive impact was short lived as its current value in the short run impacted positively on growth.Oil consumption impacted positively but insignificantly. Oil production impacted negatively and significantly on growth in the short run but impacted positively and significantly on economic growth in the long run. Crude oil price volatility impacted negatively on growth both in the short and long run. The results were discussed and counselling implications were made. The most important are: Government should embark on diversification strategies: for Nigeria is the return to commercial agriculture. The processing and manufacturing Industry should be revitalized.
