- ItemOpen AccessThe Effects of Compulsive Texting on Spelling Ability and Academic Performance of Adolescents in Yaba LGA of Lagos State, Nigeria(13th UNILAG Annual Research Conference and Fair, 2018-08-28) Ikuburuju-Orola, A.; Olusakin, A.MThis study investigated the effect of compulsive texting behaviour on spelling ability and academic performance of adolescents in Yaba local government area, Lagos state. Correlational research design was adopted in the study. The population for this study comprised all SS2 students in co-educational public schools in Yaba local government area. A total of 145 participants were selected from two co-educational public senior secondary schools in Yaba local government area, through a simple random sampling technique. Thirty nine (39) out of one hundred and forty five (145) participants were identified to be compulsive texters based on their response to the compulsive texting items and their frequency of texting. Two (2) hypotheses were tested in this study. A questionnaire developed by the researcher with a reliability coefficient of 0.65 was employed in collection of data. The data were analysed and the hypotheses were tested with the use of mean, standard deviation and pearson product moment correlation at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that there is no significant relationship between academic performances of compulsive texters. Also, compulsive texting doesn't have any relationship with the spelling ability of adolescents. It was recommended that smart phones use should not be discouraged among adolescents. Adolescents are advised to reduce its use during examination periods, study hours and school hours. Adolescents should also make use of Predictive text feature while texting as a conscious effort to check for incorrect spelling.
- ItemOpen AccessProfessional Guidance and Counselling Services for Open and Distance Learning Students in Nigeria(2020) Ahimie, B.; Ikuburuju-Orola, A.; Ozimende, P.Counselling services are common features in conventional school settings and are designed to help students resolve personal and academic issues, explore career options and attend to their social needs. It is of great concern that these services are absent in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes, although the peculiar nature of the programmes reveals the urgent need for them. ODL students should be able to access guidance and counselling services just as their counterparts in the conventional school setting. The main focus of this article is to point out the relevance of professional guidance and counselling services in ODL programmes in Nigeria. An in-depth description of these services and the benefits ODL students can derive from accessing them is presented. In addition, the authors adapted a conceptual model to accentuate the expected output of professional counselling services. The purpose of this model is to present a clear explanation of the fact that adequate provision of professional counselling services will lead to the improved school, workplace and family environment. It is expected that this will lead to good behaviour and improved academic performance, invariably creating a safe school, out of school and workplace environment for ODL students. Recommendations include the creation of awareness programmes through online seminars and workshops to educate ODL students on various ways to access guidance and counselling services.
