    Motivation as a Predictor of Academic Achievement and Behaviour Modifications Among Senior Secondary School Students in Lagos State

    This study investigated motivation as a predictor of academic achievement and behavior modification among senior secondary school students in Lagos state. A sample size of two-hundred and fifty (female, n = 144; male, n = 106) respondents from ten secondary schools in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos state were used. Researchers’ structured and validated questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The test-retest reliability value obtained for the instrument using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was 0.84. Data analysis was carried out with the use of frequency counts and percentages for demographic data and Chi-square for the variables studied. Findings revealed that intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, incentives and rewards would have significant effect on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos state. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the Federal Ministry of Education in association with various states governments should ensure regular provision of scholarships and monetary rewardsto students for excellent academic performance to motivate them.
