- ItemOpen AccessAssessing the Impact of Evaluation Methods on Students Attitude and Performance in Mathematics: Implications for Sustainable Educational Development in Lagos, Nigeria.(Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti. Faculty of Education, Second National Conference,2018., 2018-05) Akanni, O.O.The study assessed the impact of evaluation methods on students’ attitude and performance in mathematics. The research design was quasi-experimental(Pretest/Posttest control group method)The population for the study were Senior Secondary School in Lagos Metropolis .Two stage sampling technique as well as proportionate stratified sampling procedure was used to select 540 participants based on their class types across four schools (treatment group)and forty–five(45) from one school for the control group. Four research instruments was used They are (Diagnostics; Formative; Summative) Mathematics Achievement Tests. (DMAT, FMAT& SMAT) and Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS) by Obe (2002). Cronbach’s reliability coefficient for the three mathematics tests, which were 0.629 (Diagnostics) ,0.769 (Formative) and 0.502 (Summative)respectively and the Spearman Brown reliability coefficient for the MAS was 0.555. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and tested at 0.05 leveI of significance. The empirical research findings revealed that class types and evaluation test types exerts significant impact on students’ academic performance across the experimental groups while there is no significant impact exerted on their performance by their attitude to study between the experimental groups and the control group among others. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended among others, that teachers/educators should create feedback mechanism to students’ after any of the three evaluation test types ,such will help reveal to the students’ their area of weaknesses ,boost and maintain an increasing trend of scores. Also, the study will help enlightened the Nigeria governments to organize educative programmes for teachers to equip them with require skills and teaching methods that would make the content of their teaching easy and simple for students to understand for sustainable educational development.
- ItemOpen AccessAssessment of Factors that Influence Academic Performance Of Students in Mechanical Trade Subjects in the Senior School Certificate Examinations in Lagos State, Nigeria,(Multi- Disciplinary Journal and Learning(MDJL) Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt., 2019-03) Akanni, O.O.The study investigated factors that influence students’ academic performance in mechanical trade subjects in senior secondary school certificate examinations in Lagos State, Nigeria. Mixed research design was adopted for the study. The study sample consisted of 133 participants: 117 students and 16 teachers in educational districts 1,2 and 4 of Lagos State. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to obtain the sample size. Three research instruments were used for the study: students’ close-ended questionnaire, titled Students’ Low Candidature and Students’ Attitude in Mechanical Trade Subjects (SLCSAMTS), teachers’ open-ended questionnaire titled Teachers’ Low Candidature and Students’ Attitude in Mechanical Trade Subjects (TLCSAMTS) and Students’ Achievement Tests in Mechanical Trade Subjects titled Mechanical Trade Achievement Test (MTAT) .The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability analysis was employed (with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences-SPSS) to determine the reliability coefficient of the research questionnaires, which were 0.729 (Students) ,0.669 (Teachers) and the Spearman Brown reliability coefficient for the MTAT was 0.555.Four (4) hypotheses were formulated and tested to guide the study. Three (3) of the hypotheses were accepted (hypotheses 1, 2, and 4) while one hypothesis was rejected (hypothesis 3). The empirical findings from this research revealed that: quantitatively, there is no significant influence of gender, students’ age groups, and parental employment status on students’ academic performance in mechanical trade subjects respectively; however, students’ specialization/course exerted the influence. There is no significant influence of gender, students’ age groups, and parents’ employment status on students’ low candidature in mechanical trade subjects. Low candidature does not significantly influence students’ academic performance in mechanical trade subjects but Students’ attitude towards mechanical trade subjects significantly influences their academic performance. Qualitatively, students’ attitude towards Mechanical Trade Subjects significantly influences their academic performance. The possible rationales includes lack of teachers’ competence in teaching the trade subjects, students’ preference for white collar jobs, unavailability of learning materials, uninspiring teachers who are forced to xteach the subject, poor remuneration, government policies, the subjects were not basic requirement for entering higher institutions among others. Some of the recommendations made was to the Nigerian government who were encouraged to ensure that adequate funding is given to the programme of mechanical trade subjects, and that in collaboration with Private Industries they should create public awareness on the dividends of mechanical trade subjects through the social media.
- ItemOpen AccessCorrelates of teaching methods and academic performance of senior secondary school students in mathematics.(African Journal of Studies in Education.(AJOSIE),Faculty of Education, University of Benin, 2020-11) Akanni, O.O.There is the need for 21st century teachers to apply appropriate teaching methods that can best suit specific objectives and level exit outcomes. Substantial research on the effectiveness of teaching methods indicates that the quality of teaching is often reflected by the achievements of learners. It is in line with this that this research work investigated the correlates of teaching methods and academic performance of senior secondary school students in Mathematics. The correlational research design was adopted in the study. The population for the study includes all the senior secondary school ll students in education district IV of Lagos-state.. Multi- stage sampling techniques was adopted to select 195 participants for the study. The research instrument was titled Discussion, Demonstration and Lecture Method (DDLM) Questionnaire and Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT), which were both developed by the researcher. The instrument has a reliability of 0.692 and 0.732 respectively when tested during the pilot study. Three research hypotheses were formulated and tested to guide the study at 0.05 level of significance/ The empirical findings revealed that there is no significant relationship between lecture method of teaching and students’ academic performance; However, there is a significant relationship between demonstration, discussion and student academic performance. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that students should cultivate the habit of studying ahead of each classroom teaching, this will equip and aid their understanding of the concept their teacher will be teaching and exit positive learning outcomes ; school teachers should apply formative evaluation regularly in getting feedback from their students about the appropriateness and/or effectiveness of their chosen methods of teaching and to check the mastery level of their students’ before moving to next topic,. Also, Government should ensure that consistent financial support is given to organize needful capacity building seminars and workshops for school teachers at successive intervals in each academic year to help improve their performance.

Coventry University, United Kingdom, 2019-06) Akanni, O.O.; Emeri, P.N.; Oketade, O.One of the ways to prepare students for both internal and external examinations is constant exposure to test-taking skills. The rationale behind test-taking is to build students' courage priori to examination period especially in mathematics where many students perform below expectations. Of course, several factors could be responsible for students' poor performances but one of effective approach to eliminate this poor performance is to prepare students' mind towards test-taking. Hence, the study was carried out to examine the impact of test-taking skills in Mathematics on adolescents' academic performance in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study was a descriptive research survey. Three (3) null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance in the study. The population for the study were all senior secondary students in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos-State. A self-developed questionnaire titled Use of Test-Taking Strategy, Test Anxiety Attitude and Motivation towards Mathematics Learning Questionnaire (UTTSTAAMML) and a mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) were used as instruments for data collection. The instruments had reliability coefficients of 0.58 and 0.64 respectively when tested during the pilot study. The study revealed that the use of test-taking skills in mathematics significantly impact on adolescents' level of test anxiety, motivation, attitude and academic performance. It was therefore concluded among others that test-taking skills remain a viable tool in adjusting students' perception towards mathematics. This study among others therefore recommends that the school authorities should organize capacity building trainings and programmes which should be effective on student's test taking skills and orientating their mathematics teacher on the expected skills as this will improve student's skills in mathematics tests.
- ItemOpen AccessINFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFRMANCE IN LAGOS METROPOLIS.(International Journal of Educational Research (IJER). Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos., 2019) Emeri, P.NThis study examined influence of social media on students’ academic performance among secondary school students in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study sample comprised two hundred and fifty (n =250) senior secondary school two (ss2) students drawn from five secondary schools in the study areas, through stratified random sampling technique. The study was guided by three hypotheses while it adopted a descriptive survey design. A 25-item self-designed questionnaire titled Influence of Social Media on Students Academic Performance Questionnaire (ISMSAPQ) and Students Achievement Test (SAT) were used in the data collection. The instruments were validated and the reliability established through a pilot study with reliability coefficients of 0.76 and 0.74 (r=0.76; r= 0.74) respectively. The formulated hypotheses were tested using Chi-square, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tools. Findings revealed that social media usage has a significant influence on students’ academic performance, there is a gender difference in social media usage among secondary school students. Age was found not to have a significant influence on social media usage among secondary school students. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that, Information Communication Technology (ICT) should be integrated in pedagogical practices in schools to serve as model of positive usage of the social media to students. Students’ usage of social media should be monitored and controlled by teachers and parents to curtail the negative influence. There is need to design appropriate behavioural change communication materials that will educate adolescents and parents about the potential benefits and draw backs of using social media. Also, the government should ensure strict compliance to age restrictions in social networking thereby preventing the under aged from undue exposure to information that may be damaging to both his personality and educational pursuits.
- ItemOpen AccessParental Involvement as Predictors of Academic Performance of Adolescent’s in Bariga Local Government Area .(Faculty of Humanities and Education, Federal University,Gusau,Zamfara State., 2018) Akanni, O.O.; Amrughwudge, S.O.This study examined parental involvement as predictors of adolescents’ academic performance in Bariga local Council Development Area. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all Senior Secondary School Students in Bariga Local Council Development Area. A total of 200 adolescents were drawn from four public schools randomly selected from Bariga LCDA in Education district IV of Lagos State. Two instruments was used to generate data. They are ‘Parental Involvement as Predictors of Academic Performance of Adolescents Questionnaire’ (PIPAPAQ) and English Language Achievement Tests (ELAT). Three hypotheses were formulated and tested to guide the study, and all was rejected at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that parenting style, parents- initiated teaching and parental contributions (in terms of finance, intellectual prowess, etc.) had no significant influence on adolescent’s academic performance. The study thus recommends that in situations where parents seems to be evasive, an experienced home lesson teacher should be employed to monitor and as well influence the progress report of students’ performance. In addition, parents needs to device strategies that will help them have quality time to look into the school-related matters of their children for better academic performance.

Four hypotheses guided the study. The study sample comprised 270 SS2 students drawn from the study population through simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire titled “Impact of Technology on Academic Motivation of Students Questionnaire” (ITAMSQ) and an achievement test in English Language were the instruments used for the data collection. The formulated hypotheses were tested using T-test and regression analysis statistical tools at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is significant impact of technology on students’ academic performance, and there is significant impact of technology on students’ academic motivation among others. Based on the findings, this study recommends that schools must provide computer facilities accessible by all year levels to provide students with adequate opportunities to utilize computers. Available computer packages, especially in the public schools, must be maximized by encouraging students to use them more often. Students and teachers have to be made more aware and cautious regarding issues in the internet especially that they are generally active in social-networking sites. The net effect of these would be a leap in sustainable education development of the nation.
- ItemOpen AccessSociological Imperatives of Parental Involvement and Academic Performance of Secondary School Students: Implications for 21st Century Learning(Review of Education, Institute of Education Journal, University of Nigeria, Nsukka,, 2022) Emeri, P.NThe family is a crucial social institution and parents are the drivers of this institution to foster the societal expectations of the family. Educating the child for effective social participation is a joint responsibility of the educational institutions and the parents. Traditionally, parental involvement embraces all that parents daily do to present a ready and willing learner to the school, through nurturance, providing academic friendly home environment and educational materials. Asides these, parents are expected to do much more to promote their children’s education. This paper examined parental involvement and academic performance among secondary school students in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos Sate. This study adopted correlational research design and the study sample comprised 170 participants drawn from the study population using simple random sampling technique. Four hypotheses were postulated and tested in the study. The instruments used in gathering of data were a self-designed questionnaire titled Parental Involvement in Students’ Learning Questionnaire (PISLQ) and an English Language Achievement Test (EAT). These were validated and the reliability established through a pilot study with a reliability coefficient of 0.72. The formulated hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistic at 0.05 level of significance. The study found that there is a significant relationship between parental assistance with homework, parental participation in school activities and students’ academic performance. Also, a significant relationship exists between parental communication with the school and students’ academic performance among secondary school students. Based on the findings, the study recommended that parents should be encouraged to participate in the education of their children and this can be through assistance at home with homework as this expands the learning done at school. Schools should create avenues such as parents-teachers-meetings, for teachers and parents to meet and discuss the academic performances and issues of students.
