Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are well suited for photonic applications as well as the development of optical communication devices. The nonlinear optical response of these materials is a result of the absence of an optical center of symmetry. Such materials usually produce higher orders of optical harmonics. Using dendrimersamples available from a Michigan-based company – Dendritic Nano-Technology (DNT), the ability of dendrimers to produce higher optical harmonics have been studied using spectroscopic techniques. The production of second harmonic signals in these dendrimer species indicates that they do not possess a center of symmetry, and confirms their suitability for nonlinear optical applications.
