Abstract
This Inaugural Lecture, "The Vicegerent: The Evolution of a Contemporary Alagbede," delivered by Professor Muhammed Olawale Hakeem Amuda, explores the transformative journey from traditional blacksmithing to modern metallurgical and materials engineering. Drawing on personal experience and scholarly research, the lecture underscores the critical role of materials science—especially the manipulation of ferrous materials and the development of welding and surface modification techniques—in driving technological advancement and economic prosperity. The narrative highlights the importance of state-funded education, the integration of scientific principles into metalworking, and the evolution of curriculum and innovation ecosystems in Nigerian higher education. Through case studies in welding, surface engineering, and curriculum development, the lecture advocates for national investment in research, the need for contextually relevant innovation, and the empowerment of future generations through multidisciplinary collaboration. The lecture concludes with recommendations for stakeholders—government, academia, and industry—emphasizing the need to align research and education with national development goals and to foster a culture of excellence and impact
