Abstract
nature and benefits of female participation in politics have always been questioned by scholars (Salihu, 1997, Mama, .1995). A school of thought argues that women exercise their political rights without impediment, and that the Nigerian constitution grants them the right to take active part in the political life of the nation. In other words, like men, Nigeria women can vote, be voted for and join political parties as both members and candidates for elective positions. However, overriding evidence shows that women's role in politics has been peripheral (Olojede, 1990).
