Abstract
There is widespread deposit of bitumen in southwestern Nigeria, which compares favourably, in quantity, with other deposits elsewhere. One should note, however, that not all natural bitumen meet road construction requirements. So far, extensive geological studies had been conducted on the natural bitumen while engineering studies had been very limited. In this paper, an attempt is made to create awareness to the need for engineering investigations for establishing the best ways to utilize the materials and to evolve adequate
specifications for construction. Available studies so far conducted are presented and recommendations towards effective utilization of the materials are made.
