Abstract
The study investigated Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) administrator's transformational and transactional leadership attributes and their relationship to employees' performance. Descriptive survey research design was utilized. Two objectives and two null hypotheses tested at .05% level of significance and a total of 237 participants from five TVE Colleges in South- West Nigeria, took part in the study. Participants were stratified into two groups-administrators and employees, thereafter simple random sampling was used to select the respondents for each stratum. Data were collected using the Leadership Attribute and Employees' Performance Questionnaire (LSEPQ) adapted from the' Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5AJ. The LSEPQ was subjected to face and content validity, and Cronbach's alpha value (0. = .801) was obtained. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Results revealed that TVE administrators exhibited transformational and to some extent transactional leadership styles. The study also revealed that there was positive and significant relationship between transformational leadership, the positive dimensions of transactional leadership (contingent reward and management by exception) and employee performance. It was concluded that administrators need to be both transformational and positively transactional in order to make informed decisions that would enhance their employee's performances. It was recommended among others that further study needs to be conducted to explore how TVE administrators practically influence employee performances. This would provide a thorough understanding of how transformational and the positive forms of transactional leadership can be developed.
