dc.description.abstract | The fact that the whole world is plagued with infectious diseases is well-documented in many religious texts including the Holy Bible and the Holy Quran. Both texts make mention of PLAGUES and other INFECTIOUS DISEASES.Around 1530AD, a famous Italian poet, Girolamo Fracastoro (Figure I), suggested in one of his poems, that Syphilis and some other diseases could be contagious, thus alluding to the fact that infectious diseases had been in existence right from the Medieval period. The belief then was that these diseases were the creations of supernatural forces to punish human beings for their sins. | en_US |
