dc.description.abstract | The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated in the surface sediment from three adjoining creeks and the Lagos lagoon Nigeria. The total concentrations of the PAHs ranged from 9.76 to 6,448.66 µg/kg dry weight. A correlation existed between the sediment organic carbon content and the total PAHs concentration with a correlation coefficient (r2) of 0.856, suggesting that sediment organic carbon content played an important role in controlling the PAHs levels in the sediments. Four origin indices or concentration ratios of PAH isomer pairs were used to evaluate the suitability of these compounds as tracers to distinguish between the contamination arising from different sources. A critical appraisal of the PAH indices, therefore, suggested that PAHs contamination in the Lagos lagoon complex seems to be originated both from the high temperature pyrolytic process as well as from the petrogenic source, indicating a mixed PAH input pattern. | en_US |
