dc.description.abstract | This study was carried out to highlight the relevance of counseling professionals as agents of promoting the cultures of peace. Counseling professionals seek to help their clients/counselees resolve their issues and find solutions to their challenges in order to enjoy peace. An attempt was made to explain the cultures of peace in context. 268 out of about 1000 counseling professionals present at a conference participated in the study. All the participants (100%) preferred peace to war; 94% of the participants indicated that they are conversant with conflict resolution strategies; 90% preferred nonviolent means of achieving peace; but only 52% have knowledge of peace counseling. 87% of the participants accepted that they need to focus more on peace-building training (both for themselves and their students) to be more entrenched in the cultures of peace; 85% supported the notion that the cultures of peace should be integrated in the counseling practice; 61% would want counselors (teachers and students) to be involved in the integration of the cultures of peace into the democratization process; while 69% agreed that more research should be done on peace counseling. The overall submission was that even though ‘peace’, ‘conflict resolution’ and ‘nonviolence’ are not new concepts to the counseling professionals, yet to meet the needs of various cultures, counselor-educators would need to employ diverse skills in the areas of training, practice, helping in the process of democratization, and research. | en_US |
