Abstract
For 21st Century education, students’ academic performance can be boosted if the practice /use of virtual classroom and e-learning are encouraged, which can provide ample opportunities for formal and informal learning. This paper investigated the influence of virtual classroom and e-learning on the academic performance of adolescents in Education District IV of Lagos State. Descriptive survey design channeled the research path, with the use of Multi-stage sampling method which involved random selection of four schools in the entire Lagos Mainland zone, followed by the selection of students based on the class type in each of the selected schools. Proportionate stratified sampling technique was used to select 180 senior secondary school students from the population. Two research instruments, titled‘ ’Virtual Classroom, E-learning and Academic Performance Questionnaire (VCEAP)” and “Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT)” designed by the researcher, were used for data collection. The Cronbach’s reliability coefficients of three subscales in the research questionnaire were as follows: 0.720 (Prior Computer Skills), 0.821 (Time Management within the virtual classroom/e-learning centers), and 0.639 (Attitude towards the use of Virtual learning/E-learning), and Split-Half reliability Coefficient for MAT)is 0.560. Results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Four hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed that students’ attitude to the use of virtual classroom and e-learning did not significantly influence their academic performance irrespective of the class types (Sciences and Humanities); students’ prior computer skills as well as the time management did not significantly influence the academic performances, except for science–oriented students among others. Recommendations were that the government and stakeholders of education should think out appropriate ways of raising the much needed positive attitude of all students (irrespective of class types) towards the use of virtual classroom and e-learning; students should also help to bring their parents to the awareness on the advantages of using e-learning to enhance their academic achievement. The government should also provide computers for easy accessibility of the students.
