dc.description.abstractThis paper carries out an analysis of language use in poetry as a form of creative and rhetorical enterprise that entails the performance of a set of linguistic acts. Based on the principles of J. L. Austin's Speech Acts Theory, the paper evaluates two poems, one each of Niyi Osundare and Tenure Ojaide, as analytical items on one hand, and paradigmatic instances of poetic language as involving lire performance of actions. By investigating the patterns of linguistic rendition of Niyi Osundare's "Poetry Is" and Tanure Ojaide's "The Fate of vultures". the paper attempt to establish that the utterances contained therein represent forms of linguistic acts; that is, the performance of communicative acts through artificial and contrived metaphorical languageen_US
