Abstract
DEFINITIONS: GEORESOURCES, GEOLOGY, ROCKS AND MINERALS Georesources refers to all geological resources that serve as the basis for life in modern-day society. They include mineral, soil, groundwater and energy resources. The word Geology originated from the Greek words "geo" which means Earth and Logos meaning knowledge or study of. The realm of geology encompasses the study of the materials that make up the Earth, the associated structures and features, and the processes that produce or act on them. Modern geology also involves the study of rocks, mineralisation and geologic features of celestial bodies. Geology is an interdisciplinary science that stands at the crossroads between mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and materials science. As a result, many scientists use the term ‘geoscience’ for it. Because geology is underpinned by these branches of science, geologists are usually well-rounded scientists with a good grasp of many cross-disciplinary scientific concepts.
