dc.description.abstractThis paper examines the literacy communication content of Yoruba newspapers and how the newspapers have been serving as media of learning or instruction. Role of communication in Education and the interface between the two phenomena are highlighted. The essentiality of newspapers and indigenous language for the purpose of learning is equally underscored. The study adopted the Content Analytical method of research while the data obtained were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The three Yoruba newspapers content analysed are: Gboungboun, Iroyin Yoruba and Isokan. Taking a holistic perspective to development, the study categorized development issues into eleven. In terms of frequency, literacy/education, with 4.9%, comes sixth after Social Problems and Development, Political Programmes, Economic Programmes, Health, and Community Self-Help and Development. In terms of prominence determined by placement' on pages, use of headline point sizes and length of stories, literacy/education is adjudged to have a fair treatment in the newspapers. In terms of the various genres used in the newspapers, literacy/education appears in all (news, features, corporate editorials, personal editorials, literary, pictorials) except one: column. The study believes that Yoruba newspapers can improve on their coverage of literacy/education. While acknowledging the educational essence of columns on agriculture, reproductive and family health as well as women and children matters, the study advocates for the creation of special educational columns as found in English (language) newspapersen_US
