Abstract
This study aims to examine the impacts of sports participation on social interaction and harmony among students of tertiary institutions in Lagos state. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of students in tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The purposive sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. A total of 200 respondents from three tertiary institutions in Lagos State were randomly selected for the study. These institutions are University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Federal College of Technology (Technical), Akoka. A self-developed structured questionnaire was used as research instrument for the study. The research instrument was personally administered by the researcher and collected on the spot. The descriptive statistics of frequency count and percentage was used to analyse the demographic data of respondents while inferential statistics of Chi-square (X2) was used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results from data analysis revealed that that sport participation will have significant impact on social interaction among students of tertiary institutions in Lagos State and sport participation will have no significant impact on character improvement among students of tertiary institutions in Lagos State The study concluded that sport participation has significant impact on social interaction among students of tertiary institutions in Lagos State and sport participation have no significant impact on character improvement among students of tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The study recommended that management of tertiary institutions should invest heavily in sports through the provision of sports facilities and equipment and the rehabilitation of damaged one and students of tertiary institutions should be encouraged to participate in sports by the schools’ administration through the use of motivational techniques and the implementation of the Wednesday-for-sports in all tertiary institutions in the state. it was also recommended that there should be strict enforcement of rules governing each games/sports and students should be forced to abide and participate by those rules.
