The lipooligosaccharide, LOS, from Campylobacter jejuni, strain 1756 and 2059 were extracted by sequential treatment of the cell walls with pronase, aqueous phenol and ribonuclease. The oligosaccharides after delipidation and gel filtration on Biogel P-2, were analysed by sugar and methylation analyses as well as n.m. r. spectroscopy. The results suggest the absence of O-specificity in the cell wall carbohydrates in Campylobacter jejuni, biotype 1. The results obtained from the studies of these strains as well as strain 1924 reported previously , indicate that n.m.r. spectroscopy of the oligosaccharides present in the cell walls may be used in biotyping the microorganisms .en_US
