CHANGES IN HEAMATOLOGICAL AND HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS VARIABLES OF REHABILITATED MALE DRUG ADDICTS FOLLOWING STRUCTURED EXERCISE PROGRAMME

dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to find out the need for a structured exercise programme in the rehabilitation process of drug addicts. Rehabilitated male drug addicts at Adeniji Adele Rehabilitation Centre (Phase II), Lagos, were subjects used for this study. The pretest – posttest experimental research design was used. Subjects were placed on a structured exercise programme, three times per week (45 minutes each day) for twelve weeks. Incentives were given to the subjects in the form of material gifts donated by Nigeria Breweries Plc and wonder foods, Nigeria which enhanced subjects compliance to the exercise programme. The main variables on which this study was based included heamatologically related variables (heamatocrit, heamoglobin concentration, systolic and diastolic blood pressures) and health-related fitness variables (cardio- respiratory endurance, percent body fat, flexibility, muscular endurance). Data were subjected to descriptive statistics including the mean, standard deviation, and range. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 0.05 level of significance was used to test for any significant difference in the pretest and posttest measures. Where appropriate, Scheffe ost hoc analysis was used. The findings of this study indicated that a 12 week structured exercise programme had a positive significant effect (P<0.05) on heamatologically related variables – heamatocrit and Hb (increased from 39.9  3.30% to 42.64  4.81% and Hb – 12.64  0.27 g% to 14.20  1.61 g %) and resting systolic and diastolic blood pressures (reduced from 114.40  10.03 mmHg to 103.60  8.10 mmHg / 78.80  8.33 mmHg to 70  7.64 mmHg). This study also revealed that significant positive changes (P<0.05) existed in health related fitness variables – cardiorespiratory endurance, (time to cover 1.5 mile reduced from 14.55  1.58 min/secs to 6.55  6.35 min/sec), percent body fat (8.69  1.65% to 6.33  1.07%), abdominal muscular strength (number of sit ups increased from 18.68  7.01/min to 30.72  7.64/min), and flexibility (sit and reach test increased form 31.64  4.24cm it 35.48  6.28cm). It was concluded that the exercise programme resulted in the improvement of heamatological and health related fitness variables of the subjects.en_US
