dc.description.abstract | In recent time efforts have been directed at poverty reduction to improve the wellbeing of the poor especially in the developing regions of the world. Poverty is a serious and persistent problem in Nigeria. Available studies present that a significant percent of the people still live in poverty and these are aggregated at state or geopolitical level; they neither account for spatial differentials in poverty at lower units (LGAs, wards and communities). This paper uses geospatial technique in mapping the poverty level of some selected communities in Edo state, Nigeria. Poverty vulnerability index maps were generated from the suite of indicators at community level. The study adopted questionnaire and interview for data collection designed to target focal groups and key informants. Participatory field survey method was adopted to allow for grassroots involvement and inputs from local (traditional) leaders, opinion leaders and community associations, leaders of age grades/groups, men, women and youth leaders, as well as opinion leaders including school headmasters/principals were convened in each community visited. The findings reveal that of the 171 communities surveyed and mapped, 31 communities have very high poverty vulnerability index, 69 are high, 58 are medium and 13 are low. This paper further concludes by revealing those communities that require urgent attention due to their very high poverty vulnerability index. | |
