dc.description.abstract | The imposition of colonial rule saw the ‘pacification’ of the traditional ruling elite, who had vehemently resisted foreign onslaught on their territories. However, within the context of the new colonial state, this traditional elite was gradually pushed aside while a younger group of individuals took the centre stage to articulate and negotiate the future of the Nigerian state along modern, Western lines. The activities of these successive groups of young elites were varied as they had political, social, cultural, and economic overtones. Moreover, they were organized I different groups and associations, and their operations, which were executed at different levels, spanned the colonial period and beyond. | en_US |
