An Inaugural lecture of the University of Lagos presented at the J.F Ade-Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos, Akokaen_US
I feel honoured to stand here today with the permission of the Vice Chancellor, before such an esteemed audience to deliver my Inaugural lecture - the 4th from my Department of Physiology and the third Inaugural lecture of the 2019/2020 session of this great University. This Inaugural lecture also serves as my valedictory lecture having fallen in my Retirement year after 43 years of service (teaching, research, administration) to the University and 15 years of full Professorship in the Department of Physiology. I have been doubly privileged and pleasured to have been deeply involved in both Human Physiology and Medical Education in my 43 years of teaching. To impart knowledge effectively, it should be expertly done, and this takes us to Medical Education. completion of my B.Sc Physiology course (that turned out to be an unfulfilled ambition for personal reasons). It has been an interesting and worthwhile journey in Physiology for me since then, and I was able to console my father with my doctorate degree in Physiology. I believe it is indeed true that if we can try to do well and be the best we can, parents will be proud of us in the end. My journey into Human Physiology was not really by choice. My first choice was Medicine (as dictated by my father, as did many other fathers in the 1960s!). Throughout my Secondary School years I was good in the Science subjects but I was excellent in the Arts subjects especially French and English Literature. And so, I always dreamt of a University degree in French, but my father would have none of it. He always had 3 posers for me-en_US
