| dc.description.abstract | In a 21st century world that is Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) driven, concerted effort should be made to preserve and sustain the benefits ICT offer to mankind. Cyber-crime is the dark side of technology that is currently assuming a worrisome trend. This social ill is becoming so attractive and popular among the Nigerian youth. This study hence examined the influence of cyber-crime on social and psychological behaviour among youth in Yaba Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Three hypotheses guided the study. The study sample consisted of 150 participants, male and female, drawn from the study population using the simple random sampling technique. A self-designed questionnaire titled Influence of Cyber-crime on Social and Psychological Behaviour of Youth Questionnaire (ICSPBYQ), was used for data collection. The instrument was validated and its reliability established through a pilot study with a reliability coefficient of 0.72 (r=0-72). The formulated hypotheses were analyzed using chi-square and t-test statistical tools at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that youth involvement in cyber-crime has significant impact on their social behavior. Also, there was a significant impact of cyber-crime on psychological well-being of youth. Gender had significant influence on cyber-crime involvement among youth. Based on these findings, it was recommended that anti-cybercrime campaigns should be intensified by the media and other relevant agencies, to get the youth aware of its social disapproval. The virtues of honesty, hard work and integrity should be taught our youth by the respective agents of socialization. Also, every effort should be made to practically demonstrate to the upcoming ones that there is dignity in labour. | en_US |
