dc.description.abstractPesticides can be bio -accumulated and biomagnified in the aquatic organism hence affecting man. This study investigated the toxicity of Lambda cyhalothrin using genotoxicity responses and histopathology to ascertain the acute and sub lethal effects on Clarias gariepinus. Twenty-eight (28) days exposures to 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 ml/L doses were conducted and several toxicological endpoints were evaluated. Sub lethal genotoxicity and histopathogical study was carried out for 28 days. The genotoxicity studied was measured using micronucleus assay ,while the histopathogical studies in gill, liver, kidney and muscle were examined using Haemotoxyclin and Eosin technique of C. gariepinus exposed to Lambda -cyhalothrin. The 96 h LC50 of C. gariepinus exposed to the Lambda cyhalothrin was 0.006 ml/L. The Lambda- cyhalothrin at the tested concentrations induced micronucleus and nuclear abnormalities in the peripheral blood of exposed fish. Micronucleus, lobed, binucleated and blebbed nuclei formation indicated no significant difference (p > 0.05), compared to control with no formation of micronucleated cells. The result of lambda-cyhalothrin indicated no significant alterations in the organs, except at concentration 0.02 and 0.05 ml/L which induced loss of epithelium in the gill of C. gariepinus exposed to Lambda cyhalothrin. The results obtained from this study showed that Lambda- cyhalothrin increase cytogenetic damage and altered epithelium in gill of C. gariepinus. This may increase genetic instability in this species, the basis for cancer formation and reproductive problems. This study serves an environmental tool for the assessment of pollution in the aquatic ecosystem.en_US
