dc.description.abstract | Pollution is an environmental problem especially in the developing countries where growth and development are not properly managed. Pollution of the environment is caused not only by man but by natural processes, but contemporary studies have shown that environmental pollution is highly associated with human activities. The survival of man is now threatened by air, water, the food he consumes and the radiation he is exposed to. This paper critically examines the different types of pollution, their sources, the impacts on man and the ecosystem as well as strategies that could be adopted in managing it. Pollution is basically classified into air, water and land pollution. Their sources generally are classified into point and non-point sources. Identifying the source of pollution actually makes it easier in finding solution to or managing it. The impacts of pollution on man and the ecosystem is great and at times goes beyond national boundary. In order to manage pollution in the environment the strategies that were identified includes: detection and continuous monitoring of pollution, changing human activities, setting and enforcement of standards, and reviewing of standards based on new researches and findings both locally and globally. In conclusion, understanding the sources and effects of pollution on man would go a long way in managing pollution through proper planning and policy making. I recommend that there should be awareness campaign on human induced sources of pollution and their impacts on man and attitudes or activities that could help in reducing pollution and also continuous monitoring of human activities within the environment. | en_US |
