Biostratigraphy is a very useful tool in exploration and production among other disciplines. Reports abound in different parts of the world highlighting the use of dinoflagellate cysts abundance and diversity peaks apart from foraminiferal and nannofossil data in stratigraphic age delineation. Appreciable numbers of well preserved dinoflagellate cysts among which were the oceanic species Impagidinium spp., Nematosphaeropsis labyrinthus and N. lemniscata were recovered from ninety-six and eighty-nine samples of wells A1and A2 between 1980-10570 feet and 1920 – 9860 feet respectively. Well A1 yielded one thousand two hundred and eighty two (1282) dinocysts, while five hundred and eleven (511) were recovered in well A2. The present study was undertaken to investigate the potentials of dinoflagellate cysts abundance and diversity peaks/minima from these two wells in the Western Niger Delta in the marking of Maximum Flooding Surfaces (MFS’s) and Sequence Boundaries (SB’s) so as to complement the conventionally used foraminiferal and nannofossils data. The evaluation of the results revealed close ties of the foraminiferal abundance and diversity peaks with dinoflagellate abundance and diversity peaks. Furthermore, at most of the dated sequence boundaries, foraminiferal abundance and diversity minima also correlated with minima of dinoflagellate abundances and diversities.en_US
