dc.description.abstractThis paper examines the techniques and the rationale for using the qualitative research technique. The study utilised a descriptive and explanatory research approach, using secondary sources of information. The study noted that the qualitative research technique is particularly employed when the issue of research is highly sentimental, emotional or confidential. As a research technique, it gives valuable insights into issues which might have been befuddled or missed by any other method and probe into issues respondents do not freely wish to disclose. The study concludes with a discussion of the strength of qualitative research techniques, which provide complex and textual descriptions of how a given phenomenon is being observed, perceived and interpreted. The qualitative research technique is also very relevant in identifying intangible factors, such as social norms, socio-economic status, gender roles, ethnicity, and religion, whose role in the research issue may not be readily apparent.en_US
