This paper highlights and examines British activities in Remo following the conquest of the Ijebu kingdom in 1892. The Remo area constituted a part of the Ijebu kingdom, and after the British conquest, there were moves by the topmost ranked Remo ruler, titled Akarigbo, to establish the area as a politically distinct entity. This ambition was largely made successful by the nature of the activities of the British who in the process established authority over the Remo area from 1894. Indeed some portions of the area (e.g. Ikorodu) were ceded to the British government. But the event of 1894 was to be of the greatest historical importance. For it was to lay the basis for the quest for an autonomous local administration in Remo in later years during the colonial period.en_US
