dc.description.abstractSeveral factors are responsible for attainment of educational objectives in every society. Studies have shown that inadequate teaching materials, insufficient human resources, dilapidated school facilities among others are responsible for non-attainment of educational objectives in Nigeria. However, few studies have paid attention to the relationship between teachers' commitment and students' achievement in secondary education. it is on this basis. that this study evaluated the impact of teachers' commitment and scoring competence on the mathematics achievement of adolescents' in Shomolu Local Government Area (I,GA) of Lagos State. The study adopted descriptive design. The populations for the study are Senior secondary School students from Shomolu Local Government Area. Simple random sampling 1I'as used to select (WO hundred (200) sampled respondents from the population. Three (3) research hypotheses \Vere tested ut 0.05 level of significance. whereas one (1) hypothesis !Vas accepted and two (2) were rejected The instrument for the study !Vas a self-developed questionnaire titled Teachers' Commitment and Scoring Competencies Questionnaire (TCSCQ) and Mathematics Achievement Test ( 1,4 1) were employed for data collection. The instruments have a reliability coefficient of 0.68 and 0.57 when tested during the pilot study. Findings front the study revealed that teachers' commitment to mathematics teaching significantly impact on their competencies and students mathematics achievement. Also, teachers 'competencies in scoring mathematics achievement tests do no/ significantly impact on students 'mathematics achievement tests. Based on the findings, it was recommended ilia: mathematics teachers should brace up their skills of competency in scoring mathematics achievement tests through on-the-job training and retraining: and that curriculum planners should key into the present research findings to underscore the relevant and updated scoring skills which could impact on students' achievement in mathematics.en_US
