dc.description.abstractIndividuals that present themselves for counselling come in different forms with different needs. Among the groups that need special counselling are the auditory- impaired clients. These clients have been variedly described by professionals and laymen alike as "hard of hearing, deaf, deafened, partially deaf, and partially hearing:. These erms are used, according to Kirk and Gallagher (1979) to differentiate some hearing- -impaired children from the other. For instance, deafened refers to someone who once d hearing, developed language and speech, but later became deaf; Hard of hearing are tose whose hearing is disabled to an extent (usually 35 - 69 dB ISO) that makes difficult but does not preclude the understanding of speech through the ear alone, without or with a hearing aid, whereas a deaf person is one whose hearing is disabled '0 an extent (usually 70 dB ISO or greater) that precludes the understanding of speech • rough the ear alone, without or with the use of hearing aid (Moores, 1978). Auditory impairment (Hearing loss) was defined by the Conference of Executives 0' American School for the Deaf (1925) as a "genetic term indicating a hearing disability . at may range in severity from mild to profound". The degree of hearing loss is normally measured in decibels (DB) giving rise to the concept of residual hearing. One outstanding consequence of hearing loss is break down in communication.
