This research studied the effect of drying methods on the yield and chemical constituents of essential oil from the leaves of Secamone afzelii using hydrodistillation method. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses yielded fifty-three constituents accounting for 99.93 %, 99.87 % and 99.94 % of the oils in oven dried, air dried and fresh plant materials A total of 34, 22, and 19 constituents were identified in the oils of air dried, fresh and oven dried plant materials respectively. The major compounds of the air dried oil were: caryophyllene (16.03 %), p-cymene (15.94 %) and δ-cadinene (12.20 %). The principal components of the oven dried oil were: caryophyllene (21.58 %), γ- elemene (19.95 %), and β-elemene (15.32 %). The major components of the fresh oil were: caryophyllene (27.09 %), p-cymene (24.82 %), and thymol (20.55 %). Drying methods affected the yield and chemical composition of S. afzelii.en_US
