Multi Disciplinary Approach to Inculcate Hygiene Practices for Disease Prevention and Control in Basic 1 & 2 School Pupils Using Oral Strategies and Skill Demonstration

Abstract
Hygienic practices and behaviour change constitute core disease prevention for positive health outcomes including reduced infections, morbidity and mortality in man especially among children. This action research applied pre-test, intervention post test techniques to inculcate personal hygiene practices and initiate positive health behaviours in basic primary using appropriate oral strategies. Study population comprised 200 primary school pupils while sample comprised 35 primary one pupils aged 5 – 6 years selected through simple random sampling technique out of five classes in Staff School University of Lagos Akoka. The Germ Theory and Trans -theoretical Model of Health behavior change underpinned study which incorporated use of oral connunication strategies of speech, drawings, picture books, drama, sing-songs, poems and coloring posters to re-enforce hygiene practices of hand washing, teeth brushing and toilet flushing techniques amongst pupils. Data collection applied quantitative and qualitative methods. Pre test comprised assessment of previous knowledge and practice of personal hygiene, observation of correct usage of speech, vocabulary and appropriate demonstration of hand washing, teeth brushing and toilet flushing techniques while post test evaluated behavior change and mastery of personal hygiene skills. Data analysis utilized descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentages and mean. Findings showed that participants had improved hand washing, teeth brushing, toilet flushing and increase in pupils' oracy and fluency in reciting poems and songs related to health concepts and request for use of liquid soup for hand wash. Conclusion: Demonstration and communication in teaching- learning experiences enhanced learning and personal hygiene practices in pupils. Recommendation: At home and in School, children should be motivated and encouraged to practice person hygiene to break life cycles of micro organisms and infection processes to achieve Sustainable Development Goals: 3, 4 and 6, Good health and well-being for people. 4: Quality of Education and Clean water and Sanitation
