Abstract
I Will begin ~ub~tentatively with the old fashioned definition of statistics, which IS: Statistic~ is a branch of applied mathematics that deals v:'lth the collection, presentation, summarisation, analysis and tnterpretetlon of numerical data.
Alth.o~g.h, the d~fi.nition has given adequate clarity as to what statistrclans d.~, It IS.no.tonly old fashioned but out of fashion asell. In addition, It IS deeply restrictive in two important aspe?ts, nam~ly, (a) the word probability is not explicitly :nen,tlon~d as It should; and (b) contemporarily, data can come In ~ .~arrety of forms, and not just in numerical form as the definition seems to suggest.
