dc.description.abstractThe study investigate counsellor variables as correlates of truancy/absenteeism in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The sample comprised 150 senior secondary one students one manifested truant behaviour in 2004/2005 academic session, selected from four secondary schools in Lagos Metropolis. a researcher-constructed questionnaire was used to test three hypotheses formulated in the study. The finding shows that there is a significant influence of perceived counsellor ability to disseminate information adequately on truants' psychological awareness of their latent potentialities. It also found that no significant difference in psychological awareness of latent potentialities due to truants' perception of adequacy of counsellors interpersonal relationship skills. However it was observed that truants from schools with counsellors have higher psychological awareness of their latent potentialities than those form schools without counsellors. The implication of the conclusion on counsellors, school administrators and students with respect to curbing truancy were highlighted.en_US
