Ibadan has a reputation of being a melting pot: a city of multicultural convergence. This phenomenon dates back to the beginning of the city. It was founded in the nineteenth century by individuals of diverse origins and backgrounds. An aspect of Ibadan life, which this paper seeks to illuminate, is the relationship between the “indigenes” of the city and the migrant groups. Of particular interest in this respect is the relationship between the Ibadan and Ijebu settlers. The Ijebu were not the only migrant group in Ibadan, but they have been the most numerous and most controversial in the period under consideration.en_US
