Drought is one of the greatest threats affecting agricultural productivity in sub-Sahara Africa. In view of this, the present study was aimed at screening for drought tolerance in Acha. The status of seventy - five collections from thirty - four towns in seventeen Local Government Areas of five northern states were evaluated at the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB), Ibadan, using a modified wooden box technique for drought-tolerance screening. The seeds were planted in ratio 3:1 of sandy/loamy soil, for twenty-one days after which they were subjected to water stress for 40 days to identify the drought tolerant and susceptible lines. Weeding and watering were applied as at when due. Results on wilting percentages at different days after stoppage of watering showed that lines Na1, Na2, B7, B12, N5 and N15 were the most susceptible to drought with zero percentage recovery after fourteen days; when water was reintroduced, the percentage recovery showed that lines P19, P21, P22, P23, P25 and P29 had 80% recovery rate. This showed that parental lines could be selected among them for breeding programme. Study of root architecture on the suspected drought-tolerant lines revealed longer primary and lateral root length than the susceptible lines. Identified drought-tolerant lines from this study are recommended to breeders for drought-tolerant breeding programme in Acha.en_US
