This research examined the effects of two counselling modes in assisting adolescents to overcome the various adjustment problems that confront them in secondary schools, especially at the senior secondary level. Two different modes of counselling, the Guided Inquiry Mode (Mode 1) and the Client Centred, Approach (Mode II), constituted the independent variables in this study, as well as the Rotter's I-E personality scale. Dependent variables include the use of effective and behavioural processes and effectiveness of counselling. The measures used for the dependent variables include: student problem Inventory (S.P.I) (Bakare, 1970): Relationship Questionnaire (R.O) (Sorenson, 1987); Alternatives Tried Between Interviews (A.T.B.I.) (Seron, 1968); and Relationship Inventory (R.I) (Barrett-Lennard, 1962). From an initial population of 400 adolescents in form four of two different secondary schools in Lagos, a sample of sixty-four subjects were randomly selected. Out of the sixty-four subjects in the experimental and control groups, thirty-two were internal and thirty-two were External on the basis of their extreme scores on the personality test by Rotter, (1966). There were sixteen internal, sixteen external in the experimental groups, and the same distribution in the control groups. The thirty two students in the experimental group participated in the counselling experiment which was conducted on individual basis. Each student was randomly assigned to one of the two counselling modes for eight weeks. Altogether each counselled in the experimental group attended sixteen sessions of forty minutes' counselling per session. Data collected were analysed with the used of t-test, and analysis of variance. Eight hypothesis were tested, out of which two were accepted, one was rejected and five were partly accepted and partly rejected. The results indicated that counsellees in the experimental group reported fewer problems of adjustment than subjects in the control after treatment. Significant differences seemed to emerge between the sexes (male and female) on virtually all the ANOVA test criteria, it was found in the study that the Guided Inquiry Mode I was more satisfying to the external counsellees while the client centred approach, Mode II was more satisfying to internal counsellees. Apart from making suggestions for further research, the results have very important implications for guidance counsellors in Nigeria schools, in applying the right type of counselling mode when counselling students, taking into consideration the counsellee's personality dimension.en_US
