dc.description.abstract | The paper has provided information c n the categories of rneta- cognitive skills being acquired in the introductory chemistry by Nigeria Certificate in education (NCE) Year One students of Home Economics and Agricultural Science Education Departments respectively of Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos as well as the factors that have influenced their choices of those categories. It was an ex-post factor research design with a sample size of 201. The paper has gathered data using two research instruments namely: Categories of Meta-Cognitive Skills (CMCS) and Factors Influencing Choice of Meta-Cognitive Skills (FICMS). Data were analysed using simple percentages and descriptive statistics. The result has shown that vocational education students have acquired meta- cognitive skill through rote-learning of introductory chemistry rather than solving problems collaboratively. It has also shown that assessment structure, motivation, self-efficacy, time management and prior knowledge were some of the factors that have influenced the students' choice of the meta-cognitive skill. The implication for learning is emphasized. The paper has suggested that feedback needs to be emphasized during teaching-learning situation since it helps students to appreciate what they already know and understand what they need to learn for meta- cognitive skills acquisition. It concludes that the vocational education students without prior knowledge and meaningful understanding of the first twenty elements (electrochemical series) as depicted in the introductory chemistry, undertake a steep learning curve and may not cope effectively in some courses in their areas of specialization | en_US |
