Abstract
This inaugural lecture by Professor Friday Nwankwo Ndubuisi presents a rigorous philosophical investigation into the intersection of existentialist humanism, science, and jurisprudence. Drawing from his multidisciplinary academic background, the lecture articulates a vision of law as not merely a technical instrument but a deeply moral enterprise grounded in justice, ethics, and human dignity. Ndubuisi critiques legal positivism’s separation of law and morality, advocating instead for a jurisprudence enriched by existentialist thought, particularly Sartre's emphasis on human freedom and moral responsibility. He proposes “subjective universalism” as a philosophical lens for integrating individual agency with collective moral order. The lecture further explores the influence of thinkers such as Karl Popper, HLA Hart, and Kelsen, while contrasting natural law theory with legal positivism in their approach to justice and legitimacy. In advancing a legal philosophy rooted in ethical humanism, the work challenges existing legal frameworks to uphold fairness, equity, and the intrinsic worth of human life. This reflection is especially relevant for legal reforms, policy-making, and academic jurisprudence in Africa and globally.
