Abstract
The paper examines issues and challenges in planning teacher education in Nigeria. Teacher education is an aspect of formal education that deals with the systematic training, planed preparation and professional development of eligible and willing students for teaching positions, especially in the preprimary, primary and secondary levels of education. The importance of teachers and the roles they play in the education process are central to Basic Education, particularly in the third world countries. This calls for the need to pursue quality in Nigerian teachers’ education. This paper therefore, investigates some issues and challenges in effective planning of teacher education in Nigeria with some policy implications. The paper concludes that teacher education is the key to national development and modernization for it holds the key to sound and qualitative education.
