Abstract
The paper examines the nature, characteristics and problems of SMEs in Nigeria. It adopts the SWOT analysis to highlight the opportunities and threats facing them as a result of globalization bearing in mind their strengths and weaknesses. It further proffers suggestions on ways of ameliorating the threats of globalization. These include adoption of information and communication technology, embracing new management and organizational system, formation of strategic alliances and other forms of cooperation, building industrial support institutions and infrastructures and formulation of business-friendly policies.
