Abstract
This study takes a look at how entrepreneurship education as offered in a leading Federal Polytechnic in Lagos Nigeria that provides equal opportunity of admission to potential students, affects the beliefs, knowledge and intention of final year ‘Ordinary National Diploma’ (OND) and ‘Higher National Diploma’ (HND) Students. Primary data was collected from 150 final year students (75 OND and 75 HND students) studying in the seven schools within the college, using simple random sampling procedure. The data collection instrument adopted was questionnaire and analyses were carried out using descriptive statistics and regression analysis to test the study’s hypotheses. The findings showed a significant and positive relationship between entrepreneurship education and the two dependent variables knowledge and entrepreneurial intention. Entrepreneurial knowledge was also significantly and positively correlated with entrepreneurial intention of these students. There were also some other interesting findings derived from questions that sought to find out students’ expectations from the entrepreneurship programme at the institution. The paper concludes that in order to bridge the huge gap that currently exists between tertiary institutions and the economy of African nations, attention must be paid to entrepreneurship education especially its curriculum, delivery methods, training of resource persons, skill acquisition programmes in tertiary institutions, mentorship programmes, funding opportunities for start-ups, private-sector participation in grooming future entrepreneurs and societal norms towards entrepreneurship
