dc.description.abstractThere is a pressing need to use teaching/learning methods that fit the requirements of the noughties. This is autodidactic learning that is suited to the distance mode of learning and is meant to produce learners who will be self-directing and master the use of technology in a bid to fit better into the global learning community and be lifelong learners. The study was a survey to explore the efficacy of the use of Heutagogical principles in the University of Lagos Distance Learning Institute. 400 students were selected using multistage and stratified random sampling techniques, and a duly validated 21 item questionnaire with a reliability quotient of .86, using test retest method established the reliability; along with Key Informant Interview sessions with Lecturers and Administrative staff to corroborate, showed that Heutagogical principles were being observed, but only to a certain level. The hypothesis with a calculated 2 of 70.94, which is greater than the theoretical value of 5.99, given 2 degrees of freedom at 0.05 level of significance was rejected. This suggests that there was evidence of use of Heutagogical principles in the management of DLI students. However the extent of compliance was found to be generally low and it was suggested that more elements of Heutagogy can still be incorporated in the method of teaching/learning in the DLI.en_US
