Studies before now have limited Romanticism to love, 19th century and expression of sentiment and passion. This paper tends to prove that Romanticism had existed before 19th century and still exists today in different forms. This is why tow plays Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet 17th century and Mbia’s Trois Pretendants…Un mari were asked: (1) Does a literary work always belong to the literary movement of its epoch? (2) What is a romantic conflict? (3) In what ways were the three levels of romantic conflcits manifested in both tragic and comic contexts? To answer these questions, Architextual Comparative Method of Hebert (2014) was chosen. This method implies that a literary text can be compared with a literary movement. Here, two plays were both contextualized into the romantic movement of 19th century Europe. The English tragedy and the Francophone African comedy revealed three levels of romantic conflicts irrespective of chronological, geographical and cultural diversity and despite the fact that they belong to different centuries. Findings revealed that the romantic conflicts always lead to antisocial measures of resolution as the playwrights put the characters in dilemma. Shakespeare’s characters used suicide to solve the conflict while Mbia’s characters opted for robbery.en_US
