Abstract
The paper examined instructional .competency and administrative skills of preschool teachers and suggested strategies for improving them, with a view to achieving the overall goals and objectives of preschool education in Nigeria. Preschool education is seen as a comprehensive approach to policies and programmes for children from three to five years of age. It is a critical period for both physical growth and development of cognitive function care, health, nutrition and stimulation. Pre-schools are established or integrated into the primary education system for the purpose of
achieving some educational goals, some of which include: (i) effecting a smooth transition from the home to the school (ii) preparing the child for the primary level of education (iii) enhance the quality of basic education; (iv) providing adequate supervision to children while their parents are at work; (v) inculcating social norms; (vi) inculcating in the child the spirit of enquiry and creativity through the exploration of nature and the local environment, playing with toys, artistic and musical activities; (vii) Teaching cooperation and team spirit etc. The teachers at this level of educational system are expected to be competent enough and equipped with enormous administrative skills in order for these goals to be realized.
The paper concluded that there is a dwindling operation of pre-school in many places of the Nigerian society as result of lack of teachers' instructional competency and lack of touch with the appropriate pedagogical methodology, and the absence of appropriate administrative skills on the part of the teachers in these existing schools. This paper therefore recommends among others that, provision should be made for raining and re-training of teachers on instructional competency and administrative skills to enhance instructional competence and administrative skills of preschool teachers for the overall educational development in Nigeria.
