dc.description.abstractThis paper examines the role of the media in the linguistic and cultural development of Nigeria. Specifically, it focuses on the electronic media. It looks at broadcast regulations as regards the issue opines that the media through its programmes make visible our languages and cultures. Delving into issues of message packaging, the paper argues that most local programmes can be better packaged to make them more attractive and audience friendly. This, it believes, can promote the progammes and thus the languages and cultures. It posits that the media is under-representing the indigenous languages and cultures in their programming and calls for a revisit to avoid another form of imperialism, especially in the face of debates on media hegemony. It concludes that the media can help in the linguistic and cultural development of Nigeria.en_US
